Surgery was the new gender of the 18th century. In David Cronenberg's distorted surrealist miniature model, four dissected female wax molds - from the collection of La Specola, a 250 year old science museum in Florence - lie in an incredible rest, with the camera fantastically caressing their detachable organs, exposed body cavities, and smooth waxy flesh. Under the unparalleled gaze of the director, the objects created as teaching tools present a passionate state, distorted in permanent pain and joy.
