《历史系男生》因为台词太过出色，首先在舞台剧舞台上张力十足大放光彩，随后由BBC拍摄成电影。很多人把这部电影看做同性类的经典，我并不同意，相比于美国影视作品一板一眼的模式化十足，英国的影视作品一向以大胆、文艺而著称，这部作品更是集合了宗教、教育制度、同性恋这些敏感而争议颇多的话题，对这些话题的讨论在英国电影里从来没有间断过，但是，《历史系男生》发生在私立男校的大背景下，更将这些问题激化、突出、戏剧化了。
所谓私立学校，其实并不像表面看上去那样光鲜，大家总以为中国的教育呆板，但私立学校的校长为了拼名校上线率，也会删掉体育课、减少公共课；也不仅是全面均衡的学习，为了得到全A而划考试重点、忽略内容钻研技巧者亦有之；当学生们听到老师从谢菲尔德大学毕业，会无所顾忌的鄙视之，看到从剑桥毕业的老师则毕恭毕敬，因为他将是自己的学长……
在我看来，整部电影的缘起都是由Irwin老师和boys们的一段对话引起，
Irwin：这些论文不差，只是乏味，他们在评卷人眼中没什么希望。
Boys：那我们做这一切为了什么？
