THEY'RE BOTH CONVINCED
that a sudden passion joined them.
Such certainty is beautiful,
but uncertainty is more beautiful still
Since they'd never met before, they're sure
that there'd been nothing between them.
But what's the word from the streets, staircases, hallways—
perhaps they've passed each other a million times?
I want to ask them
if they don't remember—
a moment face to face
in some revolving door?
perhaps a "sorry" muttered in a crowd?
a curt "wrong number" caught in the receiver?
but I know the answer.
No, they don't remember
They'd be amazed to hear
that Chance has been toying with them
now for years.
Not quite ready yet
to become their Destiny,
it pushed them close, drove them apart,
it barred their path,
stifling a laugh,
and then leaped aside.
你遇见一个人很难，可你弄丢那个人很容易，遗忘在车厢的书包，大雨淋模糊地电话号码，你在天桥上，他在地上，你在地上，他在捷运，你前脚刚出门，他后脚跟上，你往右走，他往左走；你们擦肩而过一百万次，但你们从未遇见，你们也许在地铁上曾因撞到对方而说对不起，曾在同一家小吃店吃过相同的东西，曾在公园的同一张长椅上坐下来，你们甚至说同样的话，喜欢同样的东西，你们天作之合举世无双。但是，你们没有遇到，没有遇到就一切免谈。你们不知道命运在和你们一次一次开着玩笑，也幸好你们不知道。
