This is basically a story about a woman (played by Vanessa Williams) rebelling against Southern traditions and racism. In an era when marriage to someone outside of race was illegal, Henriette (Williams) and Gerard (Bellows) fell in love and faced trial under the laws of the time. They plan to move to Gerard's hometown of France, where they can get married without any restrictions. Until Henriette's sister fell ill, they were forced to stay in the United States. Henriette began to make every effort to fight for the rights of her people and her position in the church. I don't want to reveal the ending, so I will end it all here.
