The story takes place in medieval France. Poet Fran ç ois Villeneuve was sentenced to death by hanging and temporarily suspended by King XI for writing derogatory poetry. His hanging will be postponed for 24 hours, during which he must defeat the invading Burgundians and win the love of the beautiful Catherine.
